  • This is the last day in 2016 and I decided to do a new feature for the website, titled “A Year in Review”. Its basically a summary of all Mark’s activities during 2016.

We started 2016 with Mark still doing his promotional round for Spotlight. The film was released in 2015 and took critic and public with a bang. The full month of January was taken with award-related events, and ‘Spotligt’ cast was included in them all.

For Spotlight, Mark received individual nominations at The Academy Awards, BAFTA, Critics Choice, Satellite Awards, plus several other nominations and wins from Film Critics associations around the Country. He also received a Golden Globe nomination for “Infinitely Polar Bear”, so for sure this would be a busy award season.

Mark first public appearance was, obviously, to attend a Spotlight lunch celebration in New York on January 4th. Among all other events, he attended The Revenant premiere on January 6th, to support his Shutter Island co-star Leonardo diCaprio.

On January 9th, Mark and his wife Sunrise attended the annual Sean Penn & Friends HELP HAITI HOME gala.

The Golden Globes took place on January 10th, and Spotlight was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Director and Screenplay. Mark attended the Netflix after party as well. The day after, Mark attended a SAG-AFTRA conversation series for Spotlight, alongside co-stars Liev Schreiber, Rachel McAdams and director Tom McCarthy in Los Angeles. The screening was followed by a Q&A. The Academy Awards Nominees were announced on January 14th, and Mark received his 3rd Oscar nomination for his work on Spotlight. The film received also another 5 nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Rachel McAdams, and Best Picture.

A boycott for the Oscars took form on Twitter, with people asking Mark to join the movement. He took his twitter account to clarify his presence at the ceremony.

On January 20 Mark was in London for a series of interviews, including a press conference for Spotlight. The promotional tour ended with a premiere at The Washington Mayfair in London.

Mark also took time to join the UK anti-fracking campaign, and recorded a video with a plea to then Prime Minister David Cameron.

January was closed with Mark attending the SAG Awards, on January 30. Mark presented during the ceremony alongside co-stars Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams. Spotlight was nominated for Best Ensemble – the equivalent as Best Film – and took home the award.

On February 02, Mark attended the AARP’s Movie For GrownUps Awards, to receive the “Best Film” award, once again for Spotlight. On the same day, Mark attended the Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon, held at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate his Oscar nomination.

The BAFTA awards happened in February 14, and Mark once again attended alongside his wife Sunrise. Aside his supporting actor nomination, Spotlight received also nomination as Best Film, and took home the Best Original Screenplay.

February was still a very busy month, as expected, and Mark attended a Vanity Fair Party for Spotlight. His Spotlight duties didn’t stop his environment ones, and on February 25 Mark visited some Oil Drilling Sites in Los Angeles, as part as his No-Fracking campaign.

The Independent Spirit Awards happened on February 27, a day before the Oscars. “Spotlight” took home the Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing and Robert Altman Award. He later attended a Night Before Party and the Grey Goose Vodka party.

Closing the awards season, Mark attended the 88th Annual Academy Awards on February 28. Spotlight took home the Best Writing, Original Screenplay and Best Motion Picture of the Year awards.

Open Road celebrated their big win by announcing that “Spotlight” would expand again to 1,000 theaters starting early March.

Mark was back, this year, on his role of Dylan Rhodes in Now You See Me sequel. The film had back Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman with Lizzy Caplan stepping in for Isla Fisher. Daniel Radcliffe also joined the cast as the new enemy, Walter Mabry. With a release date set for June 10, Summit started to release the first promotional images in the end of April.

The film received mixed reviews, but grossed over $334.9 million wordlwide. Mark toured attending a press conference in Los Angeles, and premieres in Los Angeles and Beijing. He also did a round with press interviews in June, a few days before the film release.

2016 was also a huge year for Mark towards his activism work.

In April, Mark joined the Barry Sanders campaign for USA President. He attended an event in New York, and kept very active on his social media.

In May, Mark attended a screening of the documentary ‘Dear President Obama‘, which is narrated by him. The film takes a cross-country look at drilling, highlighting its variety of contaminations, the stories of its victims, the false promise of an economic boom, with a focus on clean energy solutions that would allow us to proceed towards a future that does not rely on yet another dirty fossil fuel extraction process.

In September he joined some actors – including some of his Avengers cast mates – in a campaign against Donald Trump.

    [su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/nRp1CK_X_Yw” height=”320″]

In October he attended the screening of the documentary Before the Floor, which is produced by Leonardo diCaprio and talks about Climate Change. The same month was announced the joined In This Climate, another documentary that will be on festivals route in 2017.

October and November was taken by the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline Protests and Mark was very active on it, including with interviews explaining why did he join the protestors.

His last public appearance of the year was the Stand with Standing Rock Benefit last December 15, alongside fellow actress and activist Shailene Woodley

During 2016, some new projects was reported. In May, Mark tweeted shouting out a film he was doing with Matt Bomer and John Carroll Lynch in Los Angeles, titled “Anything“. Two days later, the project was wrapping already and we didn’t know a thing or two about it. Some twitter gathering gave us the information about being adapted from a stage play also titled Anything, staged on Lillian Theatre back in 2007.

In September, some media outlets started to report the film, and some backlast occurred towards Mark and Matt Bomer. It happens that Bomer is playing a transgender, and some people wasn’t happy about it. The whole thing made Mark go to his twitter in Bomer’s defense, since he is the film producer.

We have no words yet on when ‘Anything’ will be released and if Mark has any role on it, or is just working behind the scenes.

Also in May, Marvel released the cast for Thor:Ragnarok and the previous rumours was confirmed: Bruce Banner/The Hulk is back for another film. Mark filmed his parts during Summer, and Disney will release it on Nov. 3, 2017.

During Marvel’s Comic-Con panel, it was also released a video named Team Thor, a hilarious mockumentary put together by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi that shows what the god of thunder was up to during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Mark Ruffalo is as much fun to watch opposite Hemsworth as he’s been with Robert Downy, Jr.

    [su_youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF3aIlFv124″ height=”320″]

In – another – good note, it was revealed that Mark will receive his own “Hollywood Walk of Fame” Star. No date for his ceremony was set, yet.

So, that’s it! This is our last update of the year and, with it, I want to wish all our visitors a very happy New Year! Thanks for another year, for your visit, your comments, your friendship!

We’ll try to make this an annual series, and I want to give a thanks/shout-out to my friends Frederik from Simply Streep, Lindsey from Rachel McAdams Online and Jess from Glamour Reese for the inspiration on the ‘Year in Review’ special.

To finish, I wish Mark and his family the best in this coming year. Happy 2017!

Everything shall be working fine now, but our domain name has changed to mark-ruffalo.com. We’ve been using it for a while but now mruffalo.com won’t work anymore, so please update your bookmarks and help to spread the word!

Thanks Gertie and the amazing fan-sites.org for being our host since the first day! We’ll miss you!
