  • Hello! Mark joined fellow actress Shailene Woodley at the Stand with Standing Rock Benefit in New York City on Thursday. Both took the stage with prominent activist Tokata Iron Eyes to urge more donations to support the cause.

While the anti-pipeline protests were successful in persuading the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke a key easement, the threat of reinstatement by an anti-environment Trump presidency means activists have not ceased their efforts to kill the pipeline completely. The easement would’ve allowed the pipeline to cross sacred Native American tribal lands and clean water sources.

  • In This Climate, a new documentary about the perils of climate change, was originally supposed to be a six-minute short. But as directors Pablo Ganguli and Tomas Auksas did more research, they realized they had to go much, much deeper. “It’s really the biggest crisis of our time,” Ganguli tells Vanity Fair in an interview.

The film will be released via Liberatum, a global multi-disciplinary cultural organization founded by Ganguli in 2001 (Auksas serves as Liberatum’s creative director). In a new trailer, shared above, famous faces like Cher, Marina Abramovic, Mark Ruffalo, and Vivienne Westwood speak passionately about the world’s climate crisis, alongside citizens whose lives have already been dangerously affected by rising sea levels.

“Where’s your brain?” Cher asks of climate change deniers in the trailer. “How can our brains be so different? How can you not notice all the things that are changing?”

Ganguli was determined to include celebrities in the film, in order “to engage young people who are very much into the arts.”

“If you only involve government people and scientists, you’re not reaching the masses the way you should,” he says. The documentary also features Noam Chomsky and David Attenborough, among others.

The trailer includes old footage of current president-elect Donald Trump saying he doesn’t believe in climate change, an opinion he’s voiced repeatedly over the years (he previously called global warming a hoax created by China). The fact that a world leader holds such beliefs is a “big worry,” Ganguli says. “Most people, like it or not, do care about these issues . . . then you have someone like Trump who comes in and de-values the intelligence of the ordinary man on the street.”

“I would hope that the people who advise him once he goes to White House, the people who are going to be working closely with him, will inject some basic intelligence into his mind as far as the environment is concerned,” he adds.

In This Climate will be screened at festivals and events around the world in early 2017.

  • Mark visited yesterday an Oil Drilling Sites in Los Angeles. During this week, several British outlets are reporting the support Mark is giving to Anti-Oil Drilling campaign in North Ireland.

Contact Music – Protesters contacted the actor and clean water activist after officials gave a company the go ahead to drill in Woodburn Forest near Belfast.

They are concerned its proximity to a reservoir will cause chemicals related to the drilling process to contaminate the water supply.

In a letter to Northern Irish politicians, written on behalf of his Water Defense foundation, The Avengers star accused the officials of not properly scrutinising plans for the prospective oil well.

“It is extraordinary that on this sensitive site there has been no public scrutiny through the planning process and there has been no Environmental Impact Assessment,” Mark wrote.

“We (Water Defense) implore you to protect your citizens by protecting their water. The small amount of oil and gas that can be extracted from that site pales in comparison to the nightmare that contaminating the water supply for over 131,000 residents in your community would cause.”

Ruffalo is also lending his voice to residents of Lancashire, England, who are fighting to prevent drilling and fracking in their neighbourhoods. He used his recent night out at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTAs) to send a stern message to British Prime Minister David Cameron. (Read more)

  • Mark warned in a video message to UK Prime Minister David Cameron that he was making an “enormous mistake” by “going all out” for fracking. He made the comments during an interview with Friends of the Earth.

  • The movie stars launched “100%,” a campaign aimed at making energy from renewable sources available to everyone – and making it affordable.

DiCaprio has spent much of the last few years toward environmental and animal conservation efforts. At Thursday night’s event, the actor said the clean energy movement was no longer about politics, but humanity.

“This is a grassroots people’s movement but the ambition of this movement is absolutely revolutionary. Clean energy grows local economies,” he told the crowd.

The event was held at a community garden in New York City. Musicians and dancers entertained the crowd while a solar-powered pizza truck provided food. A solar powered cell phone charging station was also available.

Ruffalo – a co-founder of the campaign – called it a “serious issue.” [more at source]

  • As part of the Climate Pledge Campaign, Mark, model Lily Cole, and MP for Bexhill & Battle/Former Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change Greg Barker attendrf Mark Ruffalo Takes The Meat Free Pledge at Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York City. Mark has tweeted a few days ago about the Meat Free Mondays, an initiative launched this month. According to the website, 14.5% of global carbon emissions are directly related to meat production. It’s the campaign’s hope that going vegetarian for at least one day a week will combat climate change in a major way. It will hopefully also act as a first step, paving the way for people to eat even less meat, or adopt a total vegetarian or vegan diet.

As a vegetarian myself, I highly approve it! Also, watch here the campaign video Sir Paul McCartney has made.

  • I’m here primarily for my children. I want to see the leaders of the world hear the will of the people and begin to implement 100% renewable energy for 100% of the people.

Tens of thousands of protesters — Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo among them — marched Sunday calling for global action on climate change. The two-mile People’s Climate March began at 11:30 a.m., packing Central Park West, Sixth Ave. and concluding at 34th St. and 11th Ave.

Participants came from all backgrounds — environmental activists walked next to indigenous peoples groups, victims of Hurricane Sandy, labor unions and religious groups, to name a few. They pushed a variety of causes, from anti-fracking to opposition of the Keystone pipeline stretching from Canada to the United States.

The march coincides with the city’s climate week, which de Blasio kicked off by announcing a commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% of 2005 levels by 2050.

Mark also recorded this video to Amazon Watch while he joined their sunrise ceremony in Central Park to receive blessings from indigenous leaders from around the world who are on the front lines of climate change.
